KATA pepatah karuhun mah, kalau mau berkembang harus mau nyarungsum hirup. Kalau tidak bisa nyarungsum diri sendiri, ya harus disarungsum ku batur.

Nyarungsum itu aktivitas seputar menyisip atau menambah, mengganti, atau memperbaiki sesuatu untuk melengkapi keadaan. Kalau di dunia tulis-menulis mah, nyarungsum téh pekerjaannya juragan redaktur. Pekerjaannya orang yang suka nyarungsum rumpaka, atau editor téa pingaraneunana.

Kenapa kehidupan harus diedit? Apa yang harus diganti? Dan apa yang perlu ditambah? Memang agak repot kalau pepatah karuhun tadi dijabarkan dengan istilah ‘nyarungsum’ dalam makna yang sekarang. Umpamanya dengan istilah nyarungsum sebagai aktivitas seorang editor. Tentu kurang pas jika dikatakan ‘kehidupan harus disarungsum’. Lagipula, nyarungsum dalam artian ‘editor’ mah, paling baru muncul di saat kesusastraan Sunda cetak mulai berkembang. Yaaah, sekitar awal abad ke-20 lah.

Ini mah nyarungsum yang tadi dikatakan karuhun. Ketika nyarungsum masih menjadi istilah asli milik tukang boboko. Coba saja paluruh ke buku-buku jadul, misalnya pada kamus Belanda-Melayu-Sunda A. de Wilde tahun 1840-an, sekurangnya istilah boboko sudah tercantum.

Oleh orang Sunda dulu mah, apa-apa selalu diberi nama. Baik benda, keadaan, atau aktivitas pasti punya istilah tersendiri. Boleh dikata, orang Sunda mah senang ngasih nama, suka ngasih sesebutan. Umpamanya sesebutan untuk ‘jatuh’, ya bergantung jatuhnya ke arah mana, sesebutannya pasti berbeda. Jadi wajar, jika urang Sunda punya seabrek leksikon yang aneh-aneh.

Sejak dulu nyarungsum memang berarti menyisip, tapi hanya menyisip ke arah samping. Jika menyisip ke arah depan itu untuk mempertebal, maka menyisip ke arah samping itu untuk memperluas. Dalam khasanah boboko, ada aktivitas menambah jumlah helai vertikal, agar anyaman bagian atas bisa lebih lebar daripada anyaman bagian bawah. Helai demi helai disisipkan di antara helai anyaman yang sudah ada. Aktivitas itulah yang disebut nyarungsum.

Yang namanya boboko itu wadah dari anyaman, bentuknya kotak di bagian bawah, melebar dan bulat ke bagian atas. Jika tidak seperti itu, tentu bukan boboko namanya. Membuatnya dimulai dari aktivitas miritan, yaitu menganyam bagian birit/pantat atau bagian sisi bawahnya. Kemudian mucuan, atau membuat sudut agar anyaman membentuk kotak yang terbuka ke atas. Setelah itu nyarungsum, agar anyaman kotak tadi, semakin atas bisa semakin berkembang dan terbuka semakin lebar. Nah … Ada frasa ‘semakin berkembang’.

Jadi, inilah yang Saya garis bawahi. Walau tukang boboko memiliki seabrek aktivitas yang bisa menjadi falsafah hidup, Saya sekarang hanya berkisah tentang aktivitas nyarungsumnya saja.

Nyarungsum itu aktivitas yang menentukan jadi-tidaknya sebuah boboko. Tentu saja setelah aktivitas miritan dan mucuan. Umpamanya kita bercita-cita membuat boboko. Setelah selesai mucuan, kita terus menganyam tanpa melakukan prosedur nyarungsum. Anyamannya sih jadi, tapi cita-cita membuat bobokonya gagal. Hasil anyamannya lurus ngageblég, dari bawah ke atas hanya sebesar biritnya saja. Bentuk yang seperti itu tidak bisa dinamakan boboko. Disebut boboko bukan, disebut bésék terlalu besar, disebut dingkul juga kekecilan. Pokoknya, hanya menghasilkan benda aneh yang entah apa namanya.

Lain halnya jika ada aktivitas nyarungsum. Anyaman yang kita buat, semakin ke atas akan semakin lebar, semakin berkembang.

Nyarungsum itu bukan proses menambal, memperbaiki, apalagi mengganti. Sesuatu yang disarungsum, harus sesuatu yang sudah benar, rapih, dan beres. Jika sesuatu itu belum benar, belum rapih, ya harus diperbaiki dulu. Setelah benar baru bisa disarungsum. Jangan nyarungsum sesuatu yang dasarnya tidak beres dan tidak rapi. Sebab hasil akhirnya akan berantakan, akan sia-sia saja. Kalau kata orang Sunda mah, disebutnya capé gawé teu kapaké, sumpahna gé.

Kembali ke pasal membuat boboko. Setelah selesai proses nyarungsum, dimulailah proses menganyam badan boboko, atau biasa disebut ngépangan. Katanya, ini adalah proses terlama yang sangat butuh kesabaran. Tapi percayalah, proses tersulit yang butuh kesabaran dan ketelitian itu adalah nyarungsum. Coba tanya pada tukang boboko. Salah menyisip, anyamannya akan jelek dan pényon.

Terkadang, aktivitas nyarungsum suka dibarengi kata ‘sekadar’. Umpamanya, “Saya mah hanya sekadar membantu nyarungsum saja.” Seolah nyarungsum adalah aktivitas tidak penting yang hanya menambah-nambah pekerjaan saja. Sesuatu yang dianggap biasa-biasa saja, kalah sama aktivitas miritan, mucuan, dan ngépangan. Padahal nyarungsum merupakan aktivitas penting yang memberi pijakan agar aktivitas ngépangan bisa menghasilkan wujud boboko yang sempurna.

Gambaran pepatah karuhun di atas, nyarungsum itu merupakan aktivitas sulit yang kurang terlihat, sebab dilakukan di atas sesuatu yang sudah beres dan sudah rapi. Kemudian dilanjutkan oleh aktivitas lain yang seolah-olah lebih rumit dan lama. Nyarungsum hanya dilakukan jika kita ingin mengembangkan dasar yang sudah beres tadi. Itu pun hanya sekadar menyiapkan ruang untuk aktivitas pengembangan yang akan dilakukan selanjutnya. Jika tidak ada aktivitas nyarungsum, maka aktivitas selanjutnya hanya akan menghasilkan sesuatu yang hanya sama seperti bentuk dasarnya saja. Walaupun kokoh dan kuat, tapi tidak berkembang dan tidak melebar, tidak sesuai dengan rencana semula.

Ya seperti ketika nyarungsum boboko. Hanya sekadar menambahkan helai-helai vertikal, agar aktivitas menganyam helai-helai horizontal bisa leluasa berkembang sebab memiliki pijakan yang tertata dan rapi. Begitulah kira-kira pepatah dari tukang boboko. Sampai disebutkan harus mau nyarungsum kahirupan. ***
