Ian Burnet, WNA Australia yang Menulis 5 Buku Sejarah Indonesia

ZONALITERASI.ID – Ada banyak cerita menarik mengenai Indonesia yang belum diketahui orang. Ian Burnet, seorang warga Australia, pernah lama bekerja di Indonesia di bidang geologi. Setelah pensiun, dia sudah menulis lima buku terkait Indonesia dalam sepuluh tahun terakhir.

Ian sekarang berusia 77 tahun dengan istri asal Indonesia yang kini tinggal di negara bagian New South Wales. Australia. Namun usia tidak membuatnya mengendurkan kegiatannya untuk menulis.

Dengan pengalaman bekerja dan mengunjungi Indonesia selama lebih dari 30 tahun, Ian melihat banyak hal yang kemudian memberikannya inspirasi untuk menulis buku.

“Saya pertama kali ke Indonesia di tahun 1968 dan Anda bisa bayangkan itu tahun setelah ‘The Years of Living Dangerously’ [sebuah film Australia yang menggambarkan masa pergolakan di Indonesia tahun 1965],” kata Ian Burnet, dilansir dari laman ABC Indonesia, Jumat, 20 Oktober 2023.

“Saya datang untuk bekerja melakukan survei gelombang seismik lepas pantai di Laut Jawa dan Laut China Selatan,” sambungnya.

Pria kelahiran South Gippsland, Victoria, sebelumnya menamatkan pendidikan sarjana di bidang geologi dan geofisika dari University of Melbourne.

“Saya kemudian kembali ke Indonesia untuk bekerja di Jakarta tahun 1970-1978 dan di tahun 1981-1985 untuk berbagai perusahaan eksplorasi minyak,” jelasnya.

Tulis 5 Buku dalam 10 Tahun

Lima buku yang ditulis oleh Ian Burnet yang ada hubungannya dengan Indonesia.

Buku pertamanya soal Indonesia adalah ‘Spice Islands’ atau Pulau Rempah, terbitan tahun 2011 yang menceritakan kehidupan di pulau-pulau di Indonesia Timur.

Dalam bukunya tersebut ia memadukan sejarah, romansa, serta pertualangan dalam perdagangan rempah selama lebih 2.000 tahun di Indonesia.

Dua tahun kemudian ia menulis buku ‘East Indies’, ‘Archipelago – A Journey Across Indonesia’ di tahun 2015, mengenai pertarungan selama 200 tahun antara kerajaan Portugis, VOC, dan perusahaan Hindia Inggris untuk supremasi di Laut Timur.

Ia mengaku, buku itu sudah dicetak selama 3 kali, dengan penjualan saat ini sudah mencapai sekitar 4.000 buah.

Lalu di buku berjudul ‘Where Australia Collides with Asia – The Epic Voyages of Joseph Banks, Charles Darwin, Alfred Russel Wallace and the Origin of On the Origin of Species’, yang terbit di tahun 2017, ia menceritakan perjalanan epik sejumlah penjelajah dan pelaut dunia, termasuk asal usul spesies.

Sementara buku paling akhir ‘The Tasman Map’ adalah biografi Abel Tasman, VOC dan penemuan Benua Australia pertama kali oleh Belanda yang diluncurkan tahun 2019.

Dalam wawancara dengan Indo Lit Club yang ditayangkan di YouTube baru-baru ini, Ian mengatakan tema utama dari semua buku yang ditulisnya adalah mengenai rempah-rempah, pulau-pulau yang menghasilkan rempah di Indonesia, serta kehadiran VOC.

“Saya menulis karena saya pernah lama tinggal di sana dan menurut saya ada banyak cerita menarik mengenai Indonesia yang belum diketahui banyak orang. Saya ingin menghidupkan kembali kisah-kisah tersebut,” katanya.

Namun ketika pensiun, Ian mengatakan sama sekali tidak menduga akan mampu menerbitkan lima buku dalam 10 tahun terakhir.

“Menulis buku pada awalnya adalah hobi setelah pensiun. Saya berpikir mungkin setelah saya melakukan penelitian, saya tidak akan menuliskannya dalam buku,” katanya, dalam wawancara dengan Toni Pollard di kanal YouTube tersebut.

“Lalu saya menulis buku, tapi berpikir mungkin buku itu tidak akan pernah selesai. Setelah selesai menulis, saya merasa mungkin tidak akan ada yang mau menerbitkannya,” tambahnya.

Namun Ian mengaku, sejauh ini belum ada penerbit atau perseorangan yang berminat untuk menterjemahkan buku-bukunya ke dalam bahasa Indonesia.

“Selama ini minat terhadap buku-buku saya lumayan, namun terbatas, karena saya menulis untuk kalangan yang terbatas, yaitu orang-orang asing yang berbahasa Inggris yang tertarik dengan Indonesia,” katanya.

Kenangan Indah

Salah satu buku yang berdasarkan pengalaman pribadinya tertuang dalam buku ‘A Journey Across the Archipelago’. Melalu buku ini Ian menceritakan kisahnya menjelajahi berbagai kawasan Indonesia mulai dari Jakarta sampai ke Timor Timur saat itu.

“Saya pernah berada di atas Candi Borobudur menunggu matahari terbit. Saya pernah mengunjungi situs Gunung Kawi di Bali pada pagi hari … waktu itu saya hanya sendirian,” katanya kepada ABC Indonesia.

“Saya pernah mengunjungi Oecusse di wilayah Timor Timur [sekarang Timor Leste] yang terpisah dari wilayah Timor Timur, karena berada di wilayah Timor Barat.”

“Saya juga melihat Selat Flores dari dekat Larantuka … selat itu dikelilingi pulau-pulau yang masing-masing memiliki gunung, namun tampak seperti sebuah laut yang luas,” tambahnya.

Ian juga terlibat dalam berbagai kegiatan di Indonesia untuk mempromosikan buku-buku yang ditulisnya, termasuk hadir di salah satu festival sastra terkenal di Indonesia, yakni Festival Penulis Ubud di Bali.

“Saya bisa melakukan promosi buku saya di Jakarta lewat Yayasan Warisan Indonesia [Indonesian Heritage Society],” kata Ian Burnet.

“Di Bali di Festival Penulis Ubud, saya hadir mempromosikan empat buku saya, dan juga saya pernah ke Kuala Lumpur, Malaka, Penang, Singapura dan tentu saja di Australia.”

Banyak Kemajuan di Indonesia

Ian menuturkan, melihat ada perubahan dengan Indonesia sekarang ini dibandingkan dengan kedatangannya pertama kali di tahun 1968.

“Tentu saja sudah ada begitu banyak kemajuan di Indonesia sejak saya pertama datang dan saya hampir tidak lagi mengenali beberapa bagian di Jakarta,” katanya.

“Namun di daerah pedesaan, kehidupan tampak tidak banyak berubah, meskipun jelas sekali warga sudah jauh lebih makmur dari sebelumnya.”

Diungkapkannya, ia belajar bahasa Indonesia begitu ia tiba. Terlebih karena menikah dengan perempuan Indonesia sehingga ia merasa harus bisa menguasainya.

“Untuk pembicaraan sehari-hari saya mengerti dan bisa melakukannya, namun untuk mendiskusikan hal yang serius, misalnya masalah politik atau agama, kemampuan kosakata saya terbatas,” akunya.

Setelah hampir 30 tahun tinggal dan mengenal Indonesia, Ian menyebutkan, memiliki sejumlah hal yang paling ia disukai dari Indonesia yang merayakan kemerdekaan ke-75 di tahun 2020 ini.

“Saya suka Nasi Padang, Kopi Tubruk, Cendol, Gula merah dan santan, dan tentu saja Durian,” katanya.

“[Namun] saya tidak suka dengan penggunaan WC Jongkok,” katanya sambil tertawa dalam wawancara dengan Indo Lit Club di YouTube. (haf)***
