UMUMNYA orang Sunda tahu tentang palakiah, atau sekurangnya pernah mendengar istilah itu. Namun banyak pula yang sama sekali belum pernah mendengarnya. Kalau di tempat lain mah tidak ada yang namanya palakiah. Paling, ada juga falakiah, dengan huruf f di awal yang terdengar jelas. Keduanya saat ini memiliki makna yang berbeda, walaupun dulunya berasal dari satu hal yang sama.

Palakiah itu upaya berdasarkan dugaan untuk mencapai maksud atau tujuan tertentu. Hanya saja, upayanya tidak lumrah dan susah difahami oleh nalar masyarakat pada umumnya. Kalau upayanya lumrah dan masuk akal mah, itu bukan palakiah namanya. Itu mah disebutnya tarékah.

Palakiah itu upaya mengakali suatu keadaan yang sulit diatasi. Tentu saja bukan akal-akalan. Antara mengakali dengan akal-akalan itu jelas berbeda. Akal-akalan mah cenderung negatif dan hasilnya sering menyimpang jauh dari tujuan. Sedangkan yang namanya mengakali, itu pastinya dipikir, direnungkan, diutang-itung dan dipertimbangkan.

Maaf, Sodara. Hitung-hitungan palakiah itu bukan sekadar utang-itung tai lutung, tapi hitungan yang didasari oleh prilaku manusia dan peristiwa pada waktu tertentu di masa-masa yang telah lampau. Jadi, orang yang memikirkan palakiah itu tidak bisa orang sembarangan. Dia harus memiliki pengetahuan dan pengalaman yang sangat luas, minimal seputar palakiah yang sedang dipikirkannya.

Istilah palakiah identik dengan karuhun atau orang tua zaman dulu. Para karuhun menempatkan palakiah sebagai tali paranti atau adat tradisi untuk menghadapi suatu keadaan. Dan kita sekarang, sering menganggapnya sebagai sesuatu yang tidak wajar walau terbukti berhasil.

Banyak prosedur dan tatacara palakiah yang diabadikan oleh para karuhun dalam rangkaian kata-kata yang nyastra berbentuk syair. Akibatnya, ada di antara kita yang menganggap palakiah itu adalah mantra berbau mistis. Yaa, bolehlah. Tak perlu disalahkan. Sekurangnya dengan membaca mantra palakiah itu, dia sudah membaca juklak dan juknis pelaksanaan palakiah itu sendiri.

Dulu, karuhun kita mah kalau hendak berupaya téh selalu nyawang béntang. Tentu saja setelah menyampaikan segala pujian dan proposal permohonan pada Sang Maha Pencipta. Nyawang béntang atau mengukur bintang-gemintang untuk menentukan waktu. Lalu membuat perbandingan dengan peristiwa yang terjadi pada waktu yang sama di masa lalu. Dicari hubungan yang paling cocok dengan keadaan yang sedang terjadi, dipilih yang resikonya paling rendah. Kemudian, ditentukanlah upaya yang pas untuk menghadapi keadaan itu. Jadilah palakiah.

Karuhun kita punya banyak palakiah untuk mengatasi segala kerumitan hidup. Umpamanya untuk mengusir hawa jahat di dalam rumah, dilakukan dengan meletakkan daun hanjuang di pojok ruangan. Kalau istilah sekarang, hawa jahat itu yaaa, sebut saja udara kotor yang berat dan beracun. Dan sekarang bisa kita pelajari, ternyata bentuk daun yang menjarum seperti daun hanjuang atau daun bambu itu mampu mengalirkan udara berat dan kotor, sekalipun itu hahanjuangan dari bahan plastik. Atau palakiah mengobati anak sakit panas dengan memandikannya menggunakan air dari teko berbahan tembaga. Contoh lain, palakiah untuk menjaga nasionalisme dan wibawa bangsa dengan cara memasang merah putih  pada balok suhunan rumah. Serta seabrek palakiah lainnya yang kita anggap tidak wajar, namun ternyata berhasil.

Perkara palakiah atau upaya nyeleneh untuk mengatasi keadaan, di zaman sekarang pun banyak terjadi. Dan nasibnya sama seperti palakiah zaman dahulu, ada yang percaya, ada yang tidak percaya. Bahkan ada yang mencibir sebagai sesuatu yang tidak masuk akal, tidak ilmiah, bahkan sampai pada tudingan syirik. Kalaupun berhasil, sering kali dianggap sebagai suatu yang kebetulan saja. Aneh, kebetulan kok sering.

Coba lihat di zaman covid seperti sekarang ini. Ketika pemerintah menganjurkan, bahkan mewajibkan semua orang melakukan ‘tiga em’. Memakai masker, mencuci tangan, dan menjaga jarak. Waduh … Kalau sesekali sih, lumrah-lumrah aja. Ini mah setiap saat, kan aneh, bahkan cenderung ngagawékeun ka balaréa. Sampai muncul sindiran yang katanya, ‘manusia bernafas kok dibatasi, dihalang-halangi’. Atau, “disuruh cucitangan melulu, kapan disuruh makannya?” Atau imbauan ketiga tentang menjaga jarak. Bahkan ketika sampai pada upaya membatasi ruang gerak manusia, ketika semua disuruh bertahan sementara di rumah saja. Ah … Ini benar-benar tidak lumrah, ini sudah melanggar kodrat. Masa, manusia disuruh diam di rumah saja. Dari dulu kodrat manusia itu berusaha menghapus jarak, berusaha berinteraksi dengan manusia lain. Bahkan semua percaya, rejeki manusia, penghidupan manusia, bersebab dari hubungan antarmanusia, dari silaturahmi. Eeh … ini malah membuat jarak antarmanusia.

Tunggu dulu. Jangan keburu cemberut, apalagi mengumbar nafsu.  Nantinya bisi kaduhung saumur-umur. Menurut saya mah, 3M dan ‘diam di rumah’ itu masuk kategori palakiah untuk membasmi si sasalad covid sialan ini. Walaupun tidak wajar dan tidak lumrah, tapi itu upaya yang telah dihitung matang, dipertimbangkan dan ditaksir segala resikonya. Itu adalah palakiah untuk mendukung tarékah yang lumrah seperti, vaksinasi, obat-obatan dan berbagai bansos. Kan kita mah, jangankan pada palakiah yang terkesan tidak lumrah itu, pada tarékah yang lumrah saja seringkali mencibir dan tidak percaya.
