ZONALITERASI.ID – Dulu, metode belajar membaca Alquran yang populer sebagai di Indonesia adalah Qowaid Al-Baghdadiyah, yaitu belajar membaca dengan cara dieja.

Di masjid, musala, dan surau, sering terdengar anak-anak tengah mengeja dengan bunyi, “alif fatah a, alif kasrah i, alif dhamah u, a-i-u”. Qowaid Al-Baghdadiyah,. Bunyi ini tentu terus berubah sesuai dengan huruf yang tengah dieja, dirangkai, lalu dibaca. Cara seperti ini membuat membaca huruf hijaiyah atau huruf Arab secara keseluruhan untuk merangkainya dalam ayat Alquran butuh waktu yang cukup lama.

Tahun 1988, K.H. As’ad Humam, warga Kampung Selokraman, Kotagede, Yogyakarta, menemukan cara baru belajar membaca Al Quran, yaitu metode Iqro.

Nama Iqro diambil dari firman Allah yang turun pertama kali, yaitu “Iqro” yang artinya “bacalah”. Mula-mula Iqro diujicobakan kepada anak-anak yang diasuh oleh tim tadarus Angkatan Muda Masjid dan Musala (AMM), Yogyakarta.

Berbeda dengan metode tersebut, Iqro yang terdiri dari enam jilid tidak lagi dieja, melainkan menyajikan cara baca dengan sistem (suku) kata. Mula-mula dipilih kata-kata yang akrab dan mudah bagi anak-anak, seperti “ba-ta”, “ka-ta”, “ba-ja”, dan sebagainya. Setelah itu dilanjutkan dengan kata yang lebih panjang, kemudian kalimat pendek, lalu mempelajari kata yang ada di dalam surat-surat pendek. Semuanya disajikan dengan sederhana sehingga yang belajar, terutama anak-anak bisa mudah mempelajarinya.

Selain cara baca yang sama sekali berbeda dari metode eja, dalam Iqro pun terdapat 14 poin penting yang menjadi konsep utuh dalam cara membaca Alquran, dua di antaranya yaitu: privat (menyimak yang belajar/santri seorang demi seorang secara bergantian), dan asistensi (santri yang lebih tinggi pelajarannya bisa ikut membantu menyimak santri lain yang masih di bawah levelnya).

Di tempat tinggalnya, K.H. As’ad Humam mendirikan Taman Kanak-kanak Alquran (TKA) untuk anak usia 4-6 tahun, dan setahun kemudian didirikan Taman Pendidikan Alquran (TPA) untuk anak usia 7-12 tahun. Dari sini awalnya Iqro disebarkan secara getok tular. Kemudian menyebar dengan cepat sehingga banyak digunakan di banyak tempat.

K.H. As’ad Humam dilahirkan di Yogyakarta tahun 1933. Pada usia 18 tahun, ia terjatuh dari pohon dan mengalami pengapuran tulang belakang. Lehernya tak bisa digerakkan dan ia mesti berjalan dengan bantuan tongkat. Kecelakaan inilah yang membuatnya tak bisa menyelesaikan sekolah, ia hanya sampai kelas II Mualimin Muhammadiyah (setingkat SMA) di Yogyakarta.

Heni Purwono dalam artikel bertajuk “K.H. As’ad Humam, Pahlawan Pemberantasan Buta Huruf Alquran” menerangkan bahwa pengapuran tulang belakang ini membuatnya tak bisa bergerak leluasa sepanjang hidupnya.

“Dalam keseharian, salatnya pun harus dilakukan dengan duduk lurus, tanpa bisa melakukan posisi ruku ataupun sujud. Bahkan untuk menengok pun harus membalikkan seluruh tubuhnya,” tulisnya.

Ia anak kedua dari tujuh bersaudara. Bersama keluarganya tinggal di Kampung Selokraman, Kotagede, Yogyakarta. Keluarganya menekuni wirausaha sebagai mata pencaharian, hal ini pula yang mendorongnya saat ia masih muda untuk berjualan barang-barang imitasi di pasar Bringharjo.

Sekali waktu ia bertemu dengan K.H. Dachlan Salim Zarkasyi asal Semarang yang menemukan metode Qiroati, sebuah metode belajar membaca Alquran. Ia pun kemudian turut mengajarkan metode Qiroati kepada anak-anak.

Dalam perjalanannya, K.H. As’ad menganalisis metode Qiroati dan menemukan solusi untuk meningkatkan pencapaian dari metode tersebut.

Kurang Ditanggapi

Temuan-temuan KH As’ad yang ia pikir bisa menyempurnakan metode Qiroati ia sampaikan kepada K.H. Dachlan Salim Zarkasyi, tapi kurang ditanggapi. Hal ini karena menurut K.H. Dachlan Salim Zarkasyi, metode Qiroati adalah metode belajar yang sudah baku dan tidak bisa dicampuri oleh metode lain.

“Hanya karena merasa bahwa temuan tersebut masih dapat disempurnakan dan kurang mendapat respons, maka disusunlah Iqro yang bersifat independen dari Qiroati,” terang sahabat K.H. As’ad, Usep Fathudin, yang saat itu masih bekerja di Departemen Agama.

Hal ini kemudian sempat menimbulkan ketegangan di antara kedua penemu metode membaca Alquran tersebut. Pada 1990, Usep Fathudin sempat bolak-balik Semarang-Yogyakarta karena diutus oleh Dirjen Bimas Islam dan Urusan Haji, Andi Lolong Tonang, untuk menyelesaikan persoalan ini.

“Untuk ‘mendamaikan’ keduanya, yang saat itu agak memanas, khususnya dari pihak Semarang,” katanya.

Ia menambahkan, ketegangan itu akhirnya mencapai jalan tengah. K.H. As’ad Humam dalam kata pengantar buku Iqro tahun 1990 menulis, “Buku Qiroati-lah yang paling banyak memberikan inspirasi dalam penyusunan buku Iqro ini,” tambahnya.

Tartil Quran Nasional

Keberhasilan Iqro dalam membantu anak-anak belajar membaca Alquran membuat K.H. Munawir Sjadzali, menteri agama saat itu, menjadikan TKA dan TPA yang didirikan oleh K.H. As’ad Humam sebagai Balai Penelitian dan Pengembangan Lembaga Pengajaran Tartil Quran Nasional.

Hingga kini, entah telah berapa juta buku Iqro yang dicetak dan disebarluaskan ke berbagai penjuru tanah air dan sejumlah negara. Tahun 1996, dalam sebuah obituari, Agus Basri dan Khoiri Akhmadi menyebutkan bahwa Iqro telah menyebar ke seluruh tanah air dan telah sampai di Malaysia, Singapura, Brunei, Thailand, Filipina, Eropa, dan Amerika.

Saat Iqro terus menyebar ke berbagai tempat dan memberi manfaat kepada banyak orang, kesehatan K.H. As’ad Humam justru semakin memburuk. Ia yang puluhan tahun menderita pengapuran tulang belakang dan perlahan menuju lumpuh, sejatinya tak pernah lelah berusaha melawan keterbatasannya.

“Suatu waktu, saya hanya ditemani sopir, pernah diajak ke pantai Parangtritis, Yogyakarta. Di situ beliau tak sungkan berlari-lari di pasir pantai, untuk melatih menguatkan otot-otot yang cenderung mendorong ke kelumpuhan itu,” tulis Usep Fathudin.

Namun, akhirnya ia tak dapat bertahan lagi. Jumat, 2 Februari 1996, K.H As’ad Humam meninggal dunia.

“Lewat sistem Iqro yang diciptakannya, K.H. As’ad Humam telah menyelamatkan masyarakat dari kebutaan terhadap Quran. Beliau adalah pahlawan penyelamat Quran,” kata Menteri Agama Tarmizi Taher dalam sambutannya saat mengantar penemu Iqro itu ke tempat peristirahatannya yang terakhir. (des/berbagai sumber)***
