PANDANGAN lulusan perguruan tinggi negeri (PTN) lebih unggul tinimbang perguruan tinggi swasta (PTS) tidaklah selalu benar. Terlebih berbagai prestasi dan penghargaan juga ditorehkan sejumlah PTS. Bukan hanya itu, sejumlah PTS bahkan mampu mendapatkan akreditasi A, termasuk pula sejumlah program studi di universitas dari Badan Akreditasi Nasional Perguruan Tinggi (BAN-PT).
Selain akreditasi yang kerap menjadi indikator di perguruan tinggi, kualitas universitas juga diukur dari sejumlah variabel. Antara lain dari kemampuan akademik lulusan dan kemampuan tambahan mereka setelah menyelesaikan pendidikan di PTS.
Lulusan PTS pun memiliki daya saing dengan mereka yang menuntaskan pendidikan di PTN sehingga terbentuk persepsi oleh publik bahwa kemampuan kedua universitas tersebut tak jauh berbeda. Bahkan, ada contoh kasus menarik, yakni, ada lulusan PTS yang lebih mudah bekerja pada sebuah suatu perusahaan tinimbang lulusan PTN. Ini karena PTS jauh lebih fleksibel dalam meramu kurikulum di setiap prodinya.
Selain itu, tidak terlepas dari bekal kompetensi yang diberikan PTS kepada mahasiswa mereka ketika di bangku kuliah. Bekal kompetensi tersebut biasanya disesuaikan dengan program studi dan kebutuhan industri. Misalnya, saat ini dengan perkembangan teknologi informasi yang kian maju, kebutuhan lulusan dengan skill menguasai teknologi informasi di beberapa perusahaan sangat dibutuhkan. Selanjutnya, tinggal bergantung kepada universitas swasta tersebut agar melengkapinya dengan ketersediaan fakultas.
Adanya kombinasi bekal kompetensi dan ketersediaan fasilitas di PTS itu yang kemudian mampu melahirkan alumni PTS yang dapat diterima instansi atau pasar tenaga kerja mana pun. Tidak mengherankan jika sangat banyak PTS yang mampu menunjukkan perkembangan, baik dari sistem, fasilitas, maupun tenaga pendidik yang ditawarkan kepada mahasiswa dengan menyesuaikan perubahan, baik skala regional maupun internasional.
Sekarang ini mutu universitas swasta pun mampu bersaing dengan mutu universitas negeri. Pasalnya, ada beberapa PTS yang tidak asal menerima mahasiswa. Mereka menerapkan metode seleksi dalam menerima calon mahasiswa. Metode seleksi dilakukan ketat seperti nilai rapor dan kemampuan bahasa Inggris.
Sistem itu menunjukkan sebenarnya PTS juga mementingkan kualitas calon mahasiswa mereka, dan harapannya mampu menyesuaikan diri dengan metode pembelajaran di PTS yang memang juga berkualitas. Sebagian besar PTS telah melakukan penerimaan calon mahasiswa baru dengan seleksi ketat, hal ini dipertimbangkan agar PTS menghasilkan input yang bagus dalam pembelajaran di perkuliahan.
Kendati demikian, PTS harus bisa mengolah bahan ‘input’ yang bagus itu sedemikian rupa. Salah satunya dengan mendatangkan dosen tamu dari luar negeri; meningkatkan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris kepada mahasiswa mereka sebagai persyaratan skripsi, thesis dan disertasi; dan pertukaran mahasiswa dengan perguruan tinggi luar negeri.
Juga ada pendidikan karakter dari dosen kepada mahasiswa dan mengundang tokoh-tokoh nasional untuk memberikan kuliah umum dan lainnya. Imbasnya bisa dilihat dari kompetensi daya saing lulusan, peluang kerjanya sangat baik dan tidak kalah dengan lulusan PTN. Rata-rata waktu tunggu para lulusan PTS untuk mendapatkan pekerjaan hanya di kisaran 3-6 bulan.
Kehadiran Lembaga Layanan Pendidikan Tinggi (L2 Dikti), dapat dipastikan akan jauh meningkatkan kualitas dan kemampuan PTS. Tentunya dengan catatan para pengelola L2 Dikti tidak membedakan antara negeri dan swasta. Mengingat pendidikan tinggi negeri maupun swasta memiliki kontribusi besar terhadap pencapaian angka partisipasi pendidikan tinggi di Indonesia, khususnya PTS.
Itulah sebabnya, Aptisi (Asosiasi Perguruan Tinggi Swasta) tetap optimis pemerintah akan bisa memperbaiki kualitas dan layanan kopertis yang bermetamorfosis jadi L2Dikti, yang akan dikelola oleh SDM yang telah berubah sudut pandangnya untuk melayani, semoga hal ini bisa tercapai, sehingga PTS khususnya tidak dianggap lagi warga negara kelas 2 (dua).
Sehingga suatu saat nanti PTS Indonesia seperti PTS di nagara-negara maju, menjadi yang terbaik. Salah satu ciri dari negara maju adalah PTS-nya sangat berkualitas dan handal, maka jika sampai sekarang PTS masih dianggap nomor dua, maka kita sedang menyatakan pantas menjadi negara tertinggal atau negara yang gagal mengelola SDM-nya.***
