DI tengah melimpahnya sumber bacaan melalui internet, kualitas perbukuan ditantang untuk makin meningkat, baik kualitas kedalaman isinya, kemasan tulisan, dan ikustrasinya (bila ada ilustrasi), hingga kemasan kenyamanan bacaannya: kertas warna krem, alias bookpaper yang ringan itu, lebih nyaman ke mata saat membaca teks padanya, ketimbang kertas HVS yang bening dan memantulkan cahaya.

Namun, apa yang sedang terjadi saat ini, justru tengah terjadi pendangkalan pada buku, disebabkan bermunculannya para pemula yang tak sabaran dan tergesa-gesa ingin menerbitkan buku. Entah pikiran apa yang menggentayangi terpurung para pemula itu. Cukup banyak pemula yang bersahaja (atau entah lugu), yang begitu percaya diri bahwa tulisan atau buku gubhannya sudah ‘taken for guaranted’ berkualitas, apalagi diterbitkan ber-ISBN.

Sungguh ISBN tidak linier dengan kualitas isi buku. ISBN adalah data peredaran buku, terutama dibutuhkan saat ini, oleh toko buku yang menggunakan mesin sensorik barcode jika ada pembelian buku. Barcode tidak bisa dikarang oleh penerbit, sebab dibuat secara mekanis oleh aplikasi macam coreldraw.

Ketika perbukuan dituntut makin berkualitas, karena bersaing dengan bacaan di internet yang melimpah dan lebih murah, justru kini penerbitan buku makin menjamur.

Jika dicarikan alasannya kenapa penerbitan buku makin menjamur, kira-kira seperti di bawah ini.

1. Sosial media, terutama beranda dan grup di facebook, diam-diam telah menjadi sarana belajar menulis yang efektif dan efesien. Jutaan judul buku di seluruh dunia lahir, karena dibidani melalui facebook. Para penulis baru itu, kebanyakan tidak belajar secara akademis melalui kampus, dan tidak sedikit mengenyam pendidikan setingkat SMP atau SMA. Karena itu, di China, tiap hari rata-rata terbit dua ribu judul karya sastra (puisi dan prosa), sedang di Indonesia, permintaan ISBN kini dibatasi 500 item per hari, artinya dirata-rata buku ber-ISBN terbit setiap hari 500-an judul.

Kehadiran sosmed, secara substansial telah mengalahkan perguruan tinggi dan dosen serta dekannya, yang justru para dosen dan dekan sedang digiring untuk menjadi mesin administrasi.

2. Budaya narsis telah memicu orang-orang untuk bernarsis ria melalui penerbitan buku, yang masih punya nilai sebagai pustaka intelektual. Narsis tidak cukup hanya dengan mejeng makan bakmie di mol. Eta mah cuman manusia sebatas perut. Namun bernarsis lewat karya tulis, apalagi dibukukan, ada kesan telah menjadi manusia intelektial, di mana ranah intelektualitas menjadi salah satu kategori penilaian kecerdasan seseorang. Inteligent Quotion (IQ) malah pernah menjadi primadona para orang tua, yang berharap punya anak memiliki IQ yang tinggi.

3. Revolusi industri percetakan menyebabkan menerbitkan buku dengan dana pribadi, terasa lebih mudah, cepat, dan murah.

Dalam kondisi seperti ini, beberapa langkah harus ditempuh untuk dan atas nama kedalaman serta kualitas kehidupan berbangsa dan bernegara.

Pertama, pemerintah sebenarnya benar-benar wajib hadir, sebagai penilai buku, sekaligus pembina para penulis. Tapi kita tahu, birokrasi tak lebih dari brokerisasi alias calo anggaran. Mereka membuat anggaran bersama DPR/DPRD, mereka pula yang menjadi calonya, kepada siapa proyek akan dijatuhkan.

Pemerintah mestinya menggelontorkan uang untuk pembicaan literasi, dengan membina dan menyubsidi pihak yang mau terjun dalam bidang literasi dan penerbitan. Harus ada percetakan murah yang disubsidi oleh pemerintah, serta sekolah editor dan layout, harus kembali dibuka. Dulu ada D3 editing di Unpad, eh malah ditutup.

Kedua, lomba-lomba perbukuan seperti yang dilakukan Yayasan Hari Puisi Indonesia untuk buku antologi puisi tunggal, kehadirannya sangat strategis dan dibutuhkan, sebab memang kualitas isi buku harus mendapatkan penilaian. Juga sayembara-sayembara penulisan yang kemudian dibukukan, adalah juga bagus. Sayangnya, di era sosmed ini, malah bermunculan sasayembaraan kepenulisan yang justru kontra-produktif dengan upaya untuk meningkatkan kualitas buku.

Ketiga, komunitas belajar yang berbasis sosmed, adalah amat bagus, namun para pelakunya harus benar-benar memperhatikan kedalaman dan kualitas isi tulisan, ketimbang hanya menjadi koordinator penerbitan buku berbayar.

Keempat, kewajiban pula bagi para penulis untuk terus berlatih, dan belajar tidak tergesa-gesa menerbitkan buku. Harus ada upaya untuk senantiasa menomorsatukan kualitas, ketimbang hanya menghitung kuantitas. Dalam banyak perkara, godaan kuantitas adalah perangkap.

Kelima, para pengelola penerbitan indie, punya kewajiban untuk terus-menerus meningkatkan kualitas editing, keabsahan isi tulisan, kejujuran, dan semua etika konvensional dalam bidang literasi, perbukuan, serta hak cipta, harus ditempuh.
