Setiap sekolah harus senantisa memiliki komitmen besar untuk menerapkan karakter luhur bukan hanya di buku dan di kelas. Tapi harus menyentuh semua wilayah sekolah sehingga saat kita masuk ke area sekolah itu kita semua bisa merasakan hidden curriculum, culture. Hal ini menjadi hal yang paling penting dalam mengolah karakter anak bangsa. Banyak sekolah yang menginvestasikan begitu banyak waktu dan pikiran untuk menyabet berbagai penghargaan, namun tidak banyak sekolah yang menjadi berharga dengan “karakter” dan “budi pekerti”.
Melihat kondisi seperti ini maka prestasi yang diraih tersebut ternyata tidak ada apa-apanya dibandingkan dengan membangun budaya welas asih di sekolah. Penanaman adab ini harus diterapkan secara menyeluruh dengan harapan bisa meraih prestasi yang sebenarnya. Sekolah bukanlah pabrik yang mencetak orang-orang pintar. Tetapi sebuah lingkungan yang membuat semua unsur di dalamnya menjadi lebih beradab. Pembelajaran welas asih bisa dilakukan dengan memberikan figure yang patut dicontoh dari kepala sekolah dan para guru. Untuk membangun citra sekolah beradab bisa dimulai dari bagaimana guru berinteraksi dengan siswa dan siswa dengan siswa lainnya. Mereka harus merasa seperti dengan saudara. Karena itulah prestasi yang sebenarnya. Semua warga sekolah bisa merasakan atmosfirnya dalam berbagai kegiatan, Jika prestasi akademik bisa dilihat dari selembar kertas, sedangkan budi pekerti hanya bisa dirasakan. Mereka akan merasakan sakit jika temannya sakit. Sehingga tidak akan terjadi lagi saling menyakiti satu sama lainnya.
Sangat diharapkan pola seperti ini akan menciptakan pendidikan alternatif di tengah gejolak generasi muda yang mudah terprovokasi dan tersulut emosinya. Penanaman pola pembelajaran seperti ini tidak dapat dicapai dalam waktu yang singkat tapi harus dilakukan secara terus menerus dan berulang-ulang sehingga menjadi pembiasaan (habit). Sebagaimana menurut Edward Lee Ivan Pavlov, “keteladanan dan pembiasaan dalam pendidikan amat dibutuhkan karena secara psikolologis anak didik lebih banyak mencontoh perilaku atau sosok yang diidolakannya dan salah satunya adalah gurunya.”
Membentuk kebiasaan baik membutuhkan waktu yang tidak sebentar namun juga tidak akan tercapai tujuan tersebut jika tidak dimulai dari sekarang. Menciptakan karakter welas asih dan menghormati orang lain sebenarnya memiliki nilai yang lebih baik dibandingkan dengan sebuah prestasi apapun. Mulailah menanamkan kedua karakter tersebut kepada siswa baik di dalam kelas maupun di luar. Sangat diharapkan dari pola ini akan menjadikan karakter generasi muda lebih penyayang. Sehingga kejadian tawuran bahkan pengeroyokan tidak terulang lagi.***
